WELCOME

To the 2nd International Conference on Security in Food, Renewable resources, and Natural Medicine 2018 (SFRN 2018)

We are proud to invite you to join us at the 2nd International Conference on Security in Food, Renewable resources, and Natural Medicine 2018 (SFRN-2018). The theme of conference is “Modern Agri-food system towards Agriculture 4.0 and delivery of Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs)”. The conference will be held from 25-26 October 2018, in PADANG, Indonesia, hosted by Universitas Andalas (UNAND) and co-Hosted by Agriculture Polytechnic of Payakumbuh (PPNP). This is the second event after the 1st International Interdisciplinary Food Security Conference 2017 (ICIFS 2017), held in Padang, Indonesia (19-20 October 2017) (link: http://iifsc2017.interconf.org/). This Conference also in conjunction with the SAFE2018 (Manila).

BACKGROUND

The right of everyone to be free from hunger is among the new sustainable development goals (SDGs). In the future, securing the food will meet many challenges, including population growth, pressures on natural resources and ecosystem services, adverse impacts of climate change on agriculture, affecting growing conditions and making adaptation measures necessary. Moreover, key issues in the current food security concern, such as nutrition, price volatility, social protection and safety nets, biofuels, food safety, research and innovation, large-scale land acquisition, and the “Right to Food” concept need to be integrated into an overall policy framework. In this conference, scientists, policy makers, and stakeholders from ASEAN and its key strategic partners will try to address this food security challenges with five major objectives:
1.    Seek the ways to strengthen Food production
2.    Prevent post-harvest losses through science, technology, and innovation
3.    Promote labor opportunities especially in the rural areas through socio and economical aspects
4.    Breakthrough innovation for Rapid responses in overcoming food supply shortages, particularly, when the emergencies situation occurred
5.    And manage the use of food for poverty alleviation

Compatible with food security issues is the Traditional Medicine (TM) and Health Supplements (HS) access for all. The TM is the sustainable ways of securing the health in ASIA countries throughout the last Millenia. Compare to modern medicine, TM is lag in development and thus it needs to be fully developed. The issue of TM was relevant not just in the Asia Region but in other Regions as well. In 2002, the World Health organization adopted a resolution (WHA 56.31) on the Traditional Medicine Strategy. Among the Strategies considered are establishment of intercountry Working Group, establishment and development of potential areas for TM, Foster closer cooperation among Asian countries, sharing of pharmacopoeias and formularies, strategies and experiences in quality control, standardization of drugs and scientific validation of TM, exchange of experts/students/health professionals as well as collaborative research. In this conference, scientists, policy makers, and stakeholders from ASEAN and its key strategic partners will try to address this food security challenges with three major objectives:
1.    Implementing measures for the integration of traditional medicines and health supplements to the Healthcare Integration Roadmap,
2.    Harmonizing technical requirements and explore possible Recognition Arrangements,
3.    Eliminating technical barriers to trade for TM and HS, without compromising public health and safety to the peoples.

Other issue is the renewable resources in Asia. Energy sectors have developed significantly over the past few decades. Energy demand had been more than doubled, while power generation is still struggling to fully supply the grids. To address the challenges of sustainable energy growth, a deliberate policy of diversifying and using indigenous energy sources efficiently at the national level is required. To this end, several development and implementation on renewable energy initiatives, such as bio-fuels, solar PV programmes, as well as promoting open trade, facilitation and cooperation in the renewable energy sector are under progress. The deployment of renewable energy technologies based on the objective to reduce oil consumption, mitigate environmental impacts of fossil fuel use, and prevent the potential negative effects of climate change. Therefore, implementation of renewable energy programmes, diversity of energy supply, and reduction of the environmental impact of energy use will be discussed in this conference. Here, scientists, policy makers, and stakeholders from ASEAN and its key strategic partners will try to address this food security challenges with five major objectives:
1.    Strategies to increase the component of RE to 23% by 2025 in the ASEAN Energy Mix.
2.    Enhance awareness on the role of renewable energy among policy makers, private sectors and public.
3.    Enhance R&D network on RE technology development and utilization within the region.
4.    Increase the promotion of renewable energy financing schemes.
5.    Increase the commercial development and utilization of biofuels with a reference standard to facilitate deployment.
